CBD in Skincare

CBD skincare

CBD is thought to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that enable it to be soothing and restorative for irritated and inflamed skin. Today, more and more beauty and skincare products contain CBD to offer benefits for the skin.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD, which is short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound from the cannabinoid family that naturally occurs in the cannabis plant. CBD is actually derived from hemp, which is one of the oldest crops. While THC and CBD are both cannabinoids, CBD does not have the psychotropic properties as THC does.

The Proposed Benefits of Skin-Care Products with CBD

Acne

There have been some studies in regards to CBD and acne. In 2014, a study showed that CBD had an effect on human sebocytes, or the cells that create sebum. Sebum is the oily substance that the skin produces that when too much is produced, clogs up pores, leading to acne. In this study, scientists found that CBD oil prevented the cells from creating too much sebum. By doing that, it prevents acne from forming.

Another study found the benefits of antifungal and antibacterial properties in CBD. This is helpful for acne because it brings down the redness and swelling associated with acne, and prevents infections on the skin. When those acne infections get bad, it can lead to scarring.

A third study found that CBD helped lessen the appearance of acne scars.

Psoriasis

Studies for skin inflammation ailments are showing the benefits of CBD as well. A 2016 study showed that an endocannabinoid called anandamide prevented the production of key inflammation signals that cause psoriasis. While it is not CBD, it does show the benefits of cannabinoids, and how CBD may also help.

Another Italian study showed the benefits of CBD in shampoo, showing that it helped skin on the scalp. This study specifically showed the benefits to those who suffer from scalp psoriasis.

Wrinkles and Aging

One of the downfalls of aging is the wear and tear our skin takes. One of those downfalls are wrinkles. But, CBD is showing to be beneficial in the skin aging process. One study from 2017 showed that CBD had antioxidant properties, which helps to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, CBD is known for its calming properties, which assists in preventing wrinkles caused by stress.

Hydrating Skin

It’s important that our skin gets hydrated to not only prevent dry and flaky skin, but also for overall function. When skin is dry and flaky, it can lead to wrinkles, but is also less resilient to bacteria and harmful substances. But, some are just prone to dry skin. Besides drinking more water, CBD can help with that.

A journal study found that CBD was helpful in moisturizing skin, and helping elasticity. While the exact reason is not known, what is known is that those suffering from dry skin for a variety of reasons found that it was effective.

Things to Consider Before You Buy

Like any product, there is some initial research that should be done before using CBD as a treatment for any skin-related condition or goal.

Try it Out

You never know how your body will react to something new, so before you try CBD fully, test it out in a small area. Ensure your body does not have a reaction to it.

Research

Not all CBD products are the same. Before you buy, find out recommendations for one that would be right for your exact condition. Also, CBD may be marketed as such, but that may be inaccurate. Make sure you look for the certificate of analysis to see that it was tested properly, and look at the FDA site regarding warning letters to false companies.

Be Aware

While cannabis has been around for what seems like forever, CBD is still pretty new to the market. There is still substantial research that needs to be done on its effects on numerous conditions. Keep that in mind when using it for any treatment. Also, since research is not complete, the amount you'll need to use or what type will vary, and need to be adjusted to meet your needs. There is no set of guidelines.

Talk to Your Doctor

Talk to your doctor before you try anything. He or she may have a different treatment plan for you. Also, while CBD might be suggested, it is important to follow the guidelines in how it might affect you, or interact with other medications you may be taking or plan on taking.
